UNICEF insists: NATO denies

NATO has denied the report of a drone strike in Afghanistan’s Kunar Province killing three children, which had been confirmed by the Kunar governor and UNICEF, the UN Children’s Fund.

In a statement condemning a steep rise in child casualties, UNICEF said an aerial attack by international forces killed three children in the eastern province of Kunar this month.

The strike occurred in the Manogi District of Kunar, where a US drone destroyed a house and killed three children. Another source alleges that seven other civilians were wounded in the attack, all from the same family.

NATO now says the whole incident is “simply not true,” despite the destroyed house, the dead children, and the seven allegedly hospitalised relatives. They say the report was the result of a “misunderstanding.”

UNICEF had visited the location and verified the incident before issuing the statement.
