US Senator Lindsey: 4,700 people have been killed in America’s drone war

In a speech to the local Rotary Club in his home state of South Carolina, US Republican senator Lindsey Graham is reported to have said “We’ve killed 4,700.”

The Easley Patch, a local website covering the small town of Easley, quoted Graham: “Sometimes you hit innocent people, and I hate that, but we’re at war, and we’ve taken out some very senior members of al-Qaeda.”

He said the idea of judicial oversight of drone strikes and targets is “crazy to me.”

This is the first time a government official has given a total number of fatalities caused by nearly a decade of drone strikes.

One Response to US Senator Lindsey: 4,700 people have been killed in America’s drone war

  1. Elizabeth Way says:

It seems to me that the firing of drones over a country one is not officially at war with must be in breach of international law, quite apart from the slaughter of largely completely innocent civilians which of course is absolutely appalling.
